Thousands of Patient Files Accessible Online After Data Breach

Thousands of North and South Carolina patients will be checking their credit report for the next year free of charge after learning their personal information appeared online.

A spokeswoman for Bon Secours Healthcare Systen says a vendor hired by the hospital mistakenly caused those patients’ personal information to easily become accessible.

It happened as R-C Healthcare Management was updating its computer network back in April.

The information contained names of more than 650,000 patients, social security numbers, the names of their health care providers and banking information.  More than 100,000 of those patients live in the Upstate.

No medical information was included in the compromised files and there is no indication the private information was used for any misconduct, the hospital said.

Bon Secours Healthcare System agreed to foot the bill for free credit monitoring for patients affected by the data breach.
